Awards given out on final day of fair

The 2008 edition of the Saline County Fair wrapped up on Sunday, July 20.

After handing out special awards, fair board president Sam Igo told the 231 exhibitors, "Thank you for participating and thank you for making Saline County proud of their fair."

In all this year there were 1,950 exhibits at the fair, including 1,379 not involving livestock or animals. Both those numbers were up from last year, when there were 1,716 total exhibits. Overall 1,290 blue ribbons were awarded, 591 red ribbons and 69 white ribbons.

University of Missouri Extension specialist Tracey Moore handed out several of the awards during the closing ceremony, including the top points exhibitors, who were each awarded $50. Those individuals were: Alex Brownfield and Katie Wansing. The top boy and girl high point award winners in each division were presented watches donated by Sturhahn Jewelers of Marshall. They were: Kade Plattner, livestock; Vivian Buie, livestock; Sydney Thurman, multi-purpose building; and Kayla Kiehl, multi-purpose building.

The Matt Bailey Sportsmanship Award, which is presented yearly to a competitor in the horse show, went to Julissa Monnig of Slater. High point winners from the horse show were given out to: beginner, Olivia Knox; intermediate, Abby Gass and advanced, Taylor Loges.

The Livestock Traveling Trophy, an award given to a person who worked hard during the fair in the "behind the scenes" jobs was given to Brent Boland of the Sweet Springs FFA. The Johnny Page Memorial Beef Award went to Shawn Harris of Marshall FFA.

The Nick Iman Award was given to Katie Tyre and the Ag Mechanics award was presented to Khris Deal.

In livestock judging the winners in order were:

Junior boys: Spencer Thomas, Austin Boland, Evan Summers; Tyler Jenkins, Drew Hayob; junior girls : Olivia Loges, Kaitlynn Fuehring, Katie Viets, Vivian Buie, Bailey Boland; senior boys: Brent Boland, Kyle Fuehring, Phillip Wattenbarger, David Hall, Chris Clevenger; senior girls:Taylor Loges, Jade Jenkins, Sierra Clevenger, Julissa Monnig, Paige Wattenbarger.

In the beef carcass contest winners were Katie Wansing, $35; Evan Summers, $25; Zack King, $10.

Shooting sports awards were also handed out. Those results, and pictures, can be seen on page 9 of the July 16 edition of The Marshall Democrat-News.

In all the fair board paid out $5,207.30 to exhibitors for points and $1,518.50 in special award money. The total collected at the Annual Ham, Lamb and Barrow sale held on Friday, July 18, was $49,996.25.
