The move followed negotiations last week between school officials and parents and citizens who support the sport, in which the number of meets were reduced and other cost savings enacted to bring the projected expense to within $1,200 of the amount budgeted.
Superintendent Dr. Craig Noah also found a head coach for the program within the district, Jim Heinzler agreeing to take the helm. Salt Fork YMCA Aquatics Director Jillian Pointer, a 1998 MHS grad, will serve as assistant coach.
"We were able to take down the cost of the program where we could make it work," Noah told the Board. "Even if the group wasn't successful, you'd want to do the program."
"On behalf of a lot of happy swimmers and happy parents, it's appreciated," noted Jay Barton, former Board President whose daughter, Allee, is an incoming freshman.
One of the big issues was finding a coach. Amber Tottingham, who had been the coach during the program's first three years, was let go in the spring and an attempt to hire Manta Rays coach Mike Ballard fell through when MSHSAA wouldn't approve him under a "hardship" provision for lack of required certification.
The plan is for Pointer to be an assistant for two years while she gains the necessary credentials, after which time Noah said "she should be certified to coach."
She will have to take an active role because Heinzler, whose daughter Stephanie was a swimmer two years ago, has other coaching commitments as an assistant football coach at Carrollton during the fall boys' season and is head of the MHS wrestling program when the girls compete in the winter.
Noah, in only his second week on the job, appeared glad to have resolved the issue in a positive manner.
"The true benefit of this was getting outside opinions on how we'd do this," Noah said. "The collaboration worked great."

In regards to "get a clue" - -
Jay Barton happens to be a very active member of this community: former president of the Marshall School Board-obviuosly a time consuming role, supports the Marshall Municipal Band by attending every Thursday night concert, among other activities... not to mention has his own law firm. We all know how much free time lawyers have...
My advice to you is to go out and make a name for yourself; Barton isn't well known because he sits in front of a computer and bashes other people for being active in the community.

Amber is headed to England. Her choice of destination. She is excited and a bit nervous and knows her family will be anxious to visit her.
She is one of the few that realizes that "life' just simply moves on..
I am just curious as to where Ms. Tottingham went? She was an excellent coach and has devoted a lot of time to the program. The article states that the district let her go. I sure hope they realize how big of a mistake that was.
Congratulations to the swimmers and a big thank you to Dr. Noah for getting this turned around and having confidence in these swimmers. Go Owls and Go Manta Rays!
Boy someone sure has it out for me when it comes to me leaving my say!
There are 12 other girls that I know for a fact that are interested in the swim program that MHS has to offer why choose a PAST school board member to quote about his daughter? Last names go far in Marshall and it will never change.
Mr. Allen, AGAIN, do your research and ask someone who really matters.
Funny, I'm betting none of you stepped up either! How bout trying to think a little more positive - like what a good thing for the kids involved that the program was saved. After all, it is supposed to be about the kids, isn't it!?!?
"Board President whose daughter...." no wonder its back..........
nice school pride heinzler....i wouldnt listen to a coach from another school.....id just call miles to whip his head again
I would guess no one else applied. The Marshall School District is a PR nightmare right now. I wish Coach Heinzler and Coach Pointer the best.
So your saying an "assistant coach" for another school district and a "head coach" in winter for wresting was selected to coach another sport at the same time? I always thought a "head coach" was to be there at all times for the kids? This seems as if nobody else applied. Or did they??
