William E. Johnson, 87, of Slater died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.
Cremation. Memorial services will be Friday, July 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Salem Evangelical Church near Saline City. Rev. Tony Gallagher will officiate. Inurnment with military honors will be held in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church or Beverly School and Farm in Godfrey, Ill., in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born March 3, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Arthur B. and Margretie Kennedy Johnson. On Sept. 26, 1942, in Chicago, he married Mary Ruth Schilling, who preceded him in death March 18, 1994. He was a member of Salem Evangelical Church near Saline City. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked 23 years for the Lombard, Ill., Fire Department before his retirement. He later worked as chief deputy assessor for the York Township of Lombard. He was a member of the Slater Police Board.
He is survived by one son, James E. Johnson of Stafford, Va.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Johnson of Worth, Ill.; and one sister, Margaret Ann Mann of Worth, Ill.
He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Arthur Johnson, and three sisters.
