Marshall man on trial in Pettis County for assault

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

The trial of Ronald L. Trower, 38, of Marshall, began Tuesday, June 17, in Pettis County, in a case concerning an incident in which Trower's then 6-week-old son was severely injured.

The trial was moved from Saline County to Pettis County in January 2008.

Trower was arrested on a class A felony charge of first-degree assault in August 2007, and held at Saline County Justice Facility on a cash or surety bond of $300,000, after the child was taken to Fitzgibbon Hospital and later transferred by air ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

The child had suffered a head injury and several newly fractured ribs, in addition to rib fractures that had been suffered at least a week previously, according to the police report.

Trower pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Joby Raines, assistant prosecuting attorney for Saline County, is arguing the case before a jury of five men and seven women. Raines called several witnesses to the stand, including paramedics who were first responders to the scene, as well as other medical personnel from both hospitals who treated the infant.

The trial continues today.
