KC man injured in I-70 accident following pursuit

Saturday, June 7, 2008

A Kansas City man suffered moderate injuries Friday afternoon, June 6, when he lost control of his car after hitting "stop sticks" placed in his path by Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers.

Tracy J. Black, 40, was being pursued by troopers on eastbound Interstate 70 when he struck the "stop sticks" about 5:20 p.m. at the 71.8 mile-marker, according to a highway patrol report.

The report did not indicate the reason for the pursuit.

Black apparently tried to change lanes to avoid hitting a 2000 Freightliner truck, but lost control of his car and struck the rear of the truck, troopers said.

The driver of the truck, Ronald D. Bassett, 69, of Jacksonville, Fla., received minor injuries.

Bassett was wearing a safety belt. Black was not, according to the report.

Black was taken to I-70 Medical Center by Sweet Springs ambulance.

Saline County sheriff's deputies and Sweet Springs police officers assisted at the scene, according to the report.

The investigation continues, troopers said.
