Nelson man charged with DWI after leading deputy on chase

Thursday, June 5, 2008 ~ Updated 5:35 PM

A Nelson man who led a Saline County sheriff's deputy on a chase Wednesday evening, June 4, has been charged with being a chronic offender of driving while intoxicated, according to unofficial court records on the Web.

Kenneth Michael Shelton, 48, was charged Thursday, June 5, following the incident Wednesday.

His bond was set at $10,000 cash only by Judge James "Tut" Bellamy, according to court records.

Shelton was arrested in Cooper County after failing to pull over for a deputy who was investigating a burglary report.

The deputy pursued Shelton's vehicle on several county roads in Saline County, along Highway AE and into Cooper County, where Shelton stopped when his pickup truck struck a concrete bridge railing, according to the deputy's report.

The chase reached a speed of 75 miles per hour at one point, the deputy said.

Following his arrest, Shelton was given a blood-alcohol test that allegedly registered .247, three times the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle, according to the report.
