Adventures in Libraryland: Gearing up for summer: A children's book review

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

On the very last day of school for the year, I talked to Trinity Ann Stewart, 7 years old, about some of the things she liked to do in her free time. The daughter of Steven and Jenna Stewart, of Marshall, has a lot of things she is interested in, including soccer, baseball, going to the YMCA, and, of course, reading.

Trinity read "If you Give a Pig a Pancake," by Laura Joffe Numeroff. This is what Trinity had to say about this book in her own words.

What is this book about?

Trinity: It's about a pig who eats a pancake, and does all sorts of things, like build a tree house. They take pictures and send them to different houses. And the pig sits on the couch, and then he takes a bath because he is covered in syrup.

If you give a pig a bath, what will he want in the tub?

Trinity: He will want lots and lots of bubbles.

What will you take pictures of, and who will you send them to?

Trinity: Well, they dressed up in all of these outfits, and they had to take pictures of each outfit, and send them to all of their friends.

What did they build outside?

Trinity: They built a tree house, and I think it looks more like a barn than a tree house. And they put up wallpaper with the sticky glue, and the sticky make the pig think of the syrup, and then he wanted more pancakes.

What was your favorite part of this book?

Trinity: Getting the pancakes, of course. My mommy makes me pancakes. I love them!

What other kinds of books do you like to read that other kids might look up here in the library?

Trinity: I like all the Junie B. Jones books, but especially Almost A Flowergirl. She almost gets to be a flowergirl in a wedding, but then she doesn't get to.

Do you like to read with your two sisters?

Trinity: I like to read with Kelly, but Rachel is still a little bit too little.

The ideas from the book gave me a lot of ideas to try out this summer, like building a tree house, or playing dress up, or jumping on the trampoline like Trinity.

One of my favorite things about this summer, however, is definitely the "Catch the Reading Bug" summer reading program here at the library. Our official kickoff -- the annual Builder's Fair -- will be June 7 at 10 a.m. here in the library parking lot.

We have a lot going on this summer, from worm races, to jugglers, to the Parasol Puppet team. We have already begun our registration, so drop on in to see what is in store!
