It didn't work out for all but a handful of Owls -- with senior Cortni Ervin the only winner in the Class 3, District 4 Championships at Mexico.
A two-time state medalist and University of Missouri recruit, Ervin kept alive her unbeaten record this season in the shot put, hitting 42 feet to win her third straight district title. However, she was one of only two Marshall girls to advance. Senior Rachel Willis won a tiebreaker for third place in the pole vault (8-0), but sophomore Kim Deutsch couldn't make that height -- which would have matched her personal record -- and finished fifth, one place from qualifying.
Freshman Katie Wells, second at least week's NCMC Championships, sliced 16 seconds off her best time in the 3,200 (12:38.9) -- but still wound up eighth. Also eighth was freshman Susan Skogsberg in the 400 (1:06.25), although freshman Kayla Whyte (1:09.91) broke her personal record in that event.
Senior Kyle Farrelly had one the best meets of his career, with two third-place throws. He added four feet, seven inches to his top distance in the discus (151-10) and only missed his standard by a half-inch in the shot put (53-7).
Sophomore Matt Buford, the NCMC 100-meter champion, couldn't again edge Fulton senior Josh Butler -- but did come in second to him in both the 100 (11.16) and 200 (23.85) to keep alive his hope of reaching state.
Sophomore Evan Johnson was fourth in the long jump (20-4), but junior teammate Emmanuel Reeders -- who won that event twice during the regular season -- missed out with a sixth-place 19-0 leap. Johnson's fourth place in the 100 (11.39) kept him going another week.
Reeders was in for another disappointment when the 400 relay team -- also including Buford, Johnson and junior Marty Kays -- missed the cut by a mere .05 seconds behind Hannibal for fifth place, despite knocking nearly a quarter-second off its previous fast time.
Meanwhile, junior Phil Perkins moved along with a second-place performance in the 800 (2:04.6), trailing Hannibal senior Zach Lewis by only four-tenths of a second.
Although he improved by nearly six seconds, freshman Bryson Fergison was out of the running in the 1,600 (5:14.5). Freshman Damon Thompson was seventh in the 3,200 (11:38.5) and senior Jeff Deutsch eighth in the pole vault (11-6).
The Marshall boys scored 53 points for fourth in the team standings, won by Hannibal (109 points). Kirksville (105) was the top girls' team, with the Lady Owls (25) 13th out of 16 schools.
Marshall will return to the Mexico track Saturday for the sectional round, with the top four in each event heading to the MSHSAA Class 3 Championships at Jefferson City the following week.
