May sales tax figures provide a bright spot in a tough year

Thursday, May 8, 2008

At the regular meeting of Saline County Commission Wednesday, May 7, Southern District Commissioner Dick Hassler said tax collections for Saline County this month were $63,878.63, considerably ahead of last year's May total of $40,877.27. There was a smaller increase in collection of the law enforcement tax at $48,030.90 compared to last year's total of $40,857.26.

Although the total for the year is still running behind 2007, the increased totals show progress, he said.

Presiding Commissioner Becky Plattner said the commission is still considering whether to accept a reported $30,000 grant for courthouse lighting. Plattner emphasized this not a grant, but is part of a 10-year program that requires the money be repaid.

There will be no session Thursday, May 8. The courthouse will be closed in observance of Truman Day. The commission will have normal office hours on Friday, May 9.
