'Hounds ripped by Northwest

Friday, May 2, 2008

HUGHESVILLE -- Not all of the winless Sweet Springs baseball team's losses have been embarrassing, but Thursday's was certainly forgettable.

Northwest of Hughesville used a 12-run second inning, which required only five hits on its part, to demolish the visiting Greyhounds in five innings, 18-2. Sweet Springs pitchers issued 10 walks and its fielders committed four errors -- three during the Mustangs big rally.

Meanwhile, senior Ian Wiskur allowed only four hits, including an RBI single by junior Quinn Jones in the first inning, and struck out 12 to pick up the win for Northwest.

Wiskur also drove in three runs with three hits, among them a first-inning double to help the Mustangs gain a 3-1 edge.

Two walks, an error and a blown fielder's choice loaded the bases and yielded a run before Northwest got its first hit of the second frame.

Senior Trevor Cunningham singled in two runs and another scored on Wiskur's single before the first out was recorded.

The biggest blow, however, was senior Austin Blackburn's bases-loaded double which plated three runs. Sophomore Zach Crooker singled in a run and Wiskur's second hit of the inning -- an RBI double -- polished off the spree.

Crooker's third-inning single and base hit by senior Levi Christenberry in the fourth added to the Mustangs' total. Crooker and Blackburn each scored three runs for Northwest (5-3).

Sophomore Zach Thomas had two hits and a walk in his three plate appearances for Sweet Springs (0-9), which is scheduled to host Leeton today.
