Bonner Springs teen killed in collision on I-70 April 27

A Bonner Springs, Kan., teen was killed early Sunday, April 27, and six people were injured in a two-car accident on Interstate 70 west of Sweet Springs, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Joshua K. Gaffney, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene by Saline County Coroner Willie Harlow. Next of kin have been notified, according to the report.

Gaffney was a passenger in a car driven by Vera V. Gaffney, 37, of Bonner Springs.

The accident occurred about 4:35 a.m. when a 2008 Honda driven by Vera Gaffney collided with a 2006 Chevrolet driven by Maurice A. Brown, 20, of St. Louis, according to the report.

Both vehicles were eastbound at the time of the accident, troopers said.

Vera Gaffney suffered minor injuries. Two other passengers in her car, Amber E. Gaffney, 10, and Timothy P. Gaffney, 42, also of Bonner Springs, were injured. Amber Gaffney suffered minor injuries and Timothy Gaffney suffered serious injuries.

Two passengers in Brown's car -- Ricky Lathan, 20, and Gordon Patterson, 22, both of St. Louis -- suffered minor injuries.

With the exception of Joshua Gaffney, everyone involved in the accident was wearing a safety belt, according to the report. It was not known whether Gaffney was wearing a safety belt, troopers said.

Everyone involved in the accident was taken to I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs.

Sweet Springs fire and ambulance crews and Saline County Sheriff's Department deputies assisted MSHP at the scene. The investiation continues.
