On Tuesday, the Hornets threatened a similar home-field advantage comeback, but were stopped short during a 5-4 loss -- one resulting from their own largesse as much as anything the Owls did to them.
Fulton was leading 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, but then some defensive gaffes gave the visitors the opening they needed.
Back-to-back errors to start the frame were followed by RBI singles by sophomore Nathan Cato and senior Josh Glassmaker, the second on a bunt.
Freshman John Lozano's grounder brought in the go-ahead run and senior Kodi Phillips' single gave the Owls a 4-2 lead.
The Hornets had taken the lead with a run in the second on an error and freshman Ryan Fritz' single and another tally in the third when junior Jacob Harrison doubled and came in on junior Darren Jacobs' sacrifice fly.
Jacobs and junior Jeremy Lane singled in the bottom of the fifth to close Fulton's deficit to a run, but the Owls got needed insurance in the top of the seventh when another error put the lead-off batter on base -- Glassmaker's single plating the runner.
Senior right-hander Michael Crim had kept Marshall in contention, allowing only one earned run through six innings. However, with one out in the seventh, the Hornets rallied. Jacobs singled and Masek doubled to put the tying run in scoring position.
Lane was issued an intentional pass to fill the sacks, setting up a potential game-ending double play, but Crim walked Fritz to force in a run and put the game-winning run at second base.
Enter senior Jared Porter in relief. He got an infield-fly-rule pop-up and retired the next batter on a grounder to second to pick up the save.
Fulton (3-8, 3-6 NCMC) banged out nine hits during the game, but stranded 10 runners on base.
Glassmaker led the Owls (4-9, 2-4), who play at Moberly today, with two hits and two RBIs.
