The Lady Owls settled for a 1-1 tie against Sacred Heart on Friday to begin the Smith-Cotton Tournament.
Marshall followed that with a 1-0 decision over the Smith-Cotton junior varsity Friday night and a scoreless tie with St. Paul Lutheran of Concordia -- which the Lady Owls had beaten earlier this season, 2-0, to end a 46-match winless streak -- on Saturday.
The Lady Owls broke the ice midway through the first half against Sacred Heart, freshman Liz Hood taking a pass from senior Paige Fifer and dancing past senior goalkeeper Laura Hunkins to dribble the ball across the goal line.
However, the Lady Gremlins (3-2-1) evened the contest early in the second half when Marshall senior 'keeper Xochitl Ruiz was caught too far away from the net and was beaten on a shot by junior Megan Moore.
"Both teams struggled to find much outside and midfield," remarked MHS head coach Josh Posegate. "It was an even game throughout."
Fifer had two shots on goal during the first half, but the Lady Owls didn't launch an attack on the net after intermission.
Although Marshall "dominated the game" against the Lady Tigers' JV, according to Posegate, "poor finishing" prevented an easy win. Freshman Shelby McCoy launched a blast from outside the box for the match's only goal, that coming with under 10 minutes remaining.
The Lady Owls and St. Paul (3-5-1) each had two shots, but neither team could connect.
A shot by McCoy was stopped in the first half and Fifer's missed in the second, while Ruiz blocked both tries by Saints junior Silje Van Hoek during the second half for her sixth shutout of the season.
"We passed better and did a better job with position," Posegate said. "We had some poor finishing attempts, but better overall teamwork than [Friday]."
The Marshall JV is set to play Boonville today, while on the varsity level the Lady Owls (8-2-2) return to NCMC action Tuesday at Moberly.
