Softball/Missouri Valley 4, Avila 3

Friday, April 18, 2008
A two-run double by junior Heather Sliger in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday turned a one-run deficit into a 4-3 Heart of America Conference victory for the Missouri Valley College softball team during its home game against Avila.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.

The Lady Eagles scored twice in the top of the first. Senior Ashley Talley, after a lead-off single, came in on a wild pitch and junior Christina Tracey doubled in the second run.

The Lady Vikings tied the game in the home half of the first on a single by junior Kimberly Fuller and junior Esperanza Reyes' sacrifice fly.

Senior Terra Nichols doubled a runner to third base in the third, a passed ball allowing her to cross, but sophomore Tatum Hathcock blanked the Lady Eagles (16-10, 4-7 HAAC) the rest of the way -- getting out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth after Fuller's hit put Valley in front.

Fuller had two hits on the day for the Lady Vikings (11-18, 3-7), who were scheduled to play at Missouri Baptist today. Those games were cancelled, but Valley is expected to make up the second game against Avila on Saturday.
