Baseball/Mexico 12, Marshall 6

Friday, April 18, 2008
Senior Ryan Hollenberg went five for five and drove in four runs with a pair of homers to lead Mexico to a 12-6 NCMC road win over the Marshall baseball team.

The Bulldogs never trailed in the game, breaking a 2-2 with three runs in the top of the third inning, two on sophomore Ryan Hellings' single following a two-out error. Hollenberg's two-run dinger in the fourth made it 7-2.

That's not a safe lead against the Owls, given their recent comeback history. Singles by seniors Jared Porter and Josh Glassmaker led to the first of four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman John Lozano's base hit and a grounder brought in Glassmaker. Freshman Ryan Smith drove in the final two tallies with a double, closing the margin to one run.

However, Mexico answered with five runs in the fifth, Hollenberg again going yard. Sophomore Grand Jones' RBI single and a two-run double by senior Andrew Jurgesmeyer preceded that shot.

That was all the 'Dogs (5-4, 3-2 NCMC) needed, as senior Kurt Lloyd threw three scoreless innings of relief to save the victory.

Lozano was four for four at the plate and Smith had three RBIs for Marshall (3-9, 1-4), which hosts Moberly on Wednesday.

It would be nice if our sports writer would show up for the games and take pictures from that actual game. This was a home game and he couldn't make it out, I've noticed him absent from alot of home meets.

Response by Eric Crump/Editor:
It would be nice, yes.

I would note, though, that we have one guy who covers all sports all the time all over the area. He has a lot of experience and knows how to pick which games he needs to attend. The most important goal is to get as much information about local sports in the paper as we can. It's always a balancing act.
