Prep Diamond Round-up/Chiefs improve to 6-0

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

WELLINGTON -- Senior Kenzie Thorp's two-run homer in the fourth inning Monday gave the Santa Fe baseball team the lead en route to a 6-2 non-conference victory at Wellington-Napoleon.

In a rematch between 2007 Class 1 sectional foes, the Tigers (1-3) jumped out front on sophomore Christian Nixdorf's solo shot in the first, then got an unearned run in the second.

However, junior Logan Kirchhoff retired nine of the next two batters -- allowing only a four-hitter while winning his fourth decision.

Junior Brandon Schmidt singled in a run for the Chiefs in the second and junior Taylor Wesley's base hit preceded Thorp's blast -- his fifth of the season. Thorp later added a double and has hit safely in 15 of 20 at-bats.

Senior Logan Wesley provided two insurance runs with a two-out double in the Santa Fe fifth.

The fourth-ranked Chiefs (6-0) play Wednesday at Northwest of Hughesville.

Concordia 11, Sweet Springs 6

SWEET SPRINGS -- Freshman Tyler Tolias' single in the sixth inning Monday broke a 6-6 tie as Concordia defeated host Sweet Springs, 11-6.

The Orioles scored three runs in the top of the first inning, two on sophomore J.R. Langkrahr's single, but couldn't hold the lead.

The Greyhounds got a pair of runs on an error in the third and sophomore Zach Thomas knocked in two with a single in the fourth.

Senior Logan Lenz smacked an RBI double as Concordia (3-5) padded its cushion with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Junior Quinn Jones had two hits and senior Ronnie Hunter scored twice for Sweet Springs (0-5), which hosts St. Mary's of Independence on Wednesday.

Softball

Sweet Springs 5, Concordia 4

SWEET SPRINGS -- Sophomore Kathleen Tyler allowed only two earned runs and struck out nine batters as the Sweet Springs softball team handed visiting Concordia its first loss of the season Monday, 5-4.

The Lady Greyhounds scored four runs in the fifth inning on only one hit, a bunt single by junior Stephanie Krause. Two walks and a pair of defensive miscues with the bases loaded brought in the runs.

The Lady Orioles (7-1) got a double from junior Kelsey Stuart and single by senior Charlie Bryson to taker a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

Junior Sammi DeWeese drew three walks, two with the sacks packed, for Sweet Springs (2-4). The Lady 'Hounds host St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Santa Fe 3, Wellington 1

WELLINGTON -- Junior Chelsea Gieselman tossed a four-hitter and drove in the winning run Monday during Santa Fe's 3-1 victory at Wellington-Napoleon.

The Lady Tigers (1-3) scored in the first inning when freshman Lauren Bross walked with the bags jammed, and Bross held the lead until the sixth when junior Joci Russell singled in the tying run.

Singles by freshman Molly Sander, Gieselman and sophomore Lauren Aversman broke the tie with two runs in the seventh for the Lady Chiefs (2-4).

Santa Fe plays Wednesday at Northwest.
