This was especially true for the young Lady Owls, who finished last among 12 teams with only 10 points. Senior Cortni Ervin accounted for all that total as the team's only medalist, winning the shot put (41 feet, 3.5 inches) for the fifth time in as many meets this season.
The Marshall boys did considerably better, coming in seventh in the team standings with 42 points.
The sprint relay unit of juniors Emmanuel Reeders and Marty Kays and sophomores Evan Johnson and Matt Buford lowered their times in both races -- winning the 800 (1:35.91) by a mere tenth of a second over Maryville and placing third in the 400 (45.51). In both cases, the Owls were faster than their medal-winning performances at the prestigious Mizzou Relays a week earlier.
Buford also placed third in the 100-meter dash (11.09 seconds), beating his time from last year's NCMC Championships by .01 seconds. Johnson broke the 20-foot mark for the first time this season with a 20-8 long jump for third place and Reeders recorded a personal-best 20-5 while placing fifth.
Junior Phil Perkins was third in the 800 (2:05.36) and senior Kyle Farrelly wound up fourth in the shot put (52-4) and fifth in the discus (134-0).
Marshall is scheduled to be back in action Saturday at the Boonville Relays.
