ALMA -- How dominant has the Santa Fe baseball team been this spring?

Consider this: the Chiefs banged out 14 hits Monday during a 13-3, five-inning home win over Windsor, and saw their team batting average fall. Going into the contest, Santa Fe was hitting a collective .616, but only managed one hit through the first two frames.

However, the Chiefs are nothing if not explosive -- and they teed off for eight runs in the bottom of the third. The first big blow was junior Taylor Wesley's two-run double. Senior Logan Wesley had an RBI single and junior Ben Catlett drove in two runs with his second hit of the frame.

Sophomore Matt Lovercamp and junior Brandon Schmidt knocked in runs with two-out singles in the fourth. The game ended in the fifth on the "10-run rule" with two runs on singles by junior Max Capps, Catlett and sophomore Hunter Rolf.

The Greyhounds (1-3) scored two of their three runs on a two-out double by freshman Daniel Sanders in the fifth. Otherwise, junior Logan Kirchhoff was in control, giving up only five hits and walking none while fanning six batters.

Santa Fe (4-0) was supposed to host New Franklin today, but rain may force postponement of that game.

Wentworth Military 15, Sweet Springs 5

SWEET SPRINGS -- Wentworth Military Academy put up crooked numbers in three innings Monday during a 15-5 romp at Sweet Springs.

The Red Dragons (4-3) racked up five runs in the third inning, getting two-run singles from juniors Joel Fowler and Ben Ronneau. Senior Ian Duke and Fowler had RBI singles in the three-run sixth and junior Dalton Deterding tripled in a run in the seventh, when the last two of four tallies were forced in on bases-loaded walks.

The Greyhounds (0-4) had three straight run-scoring singles -- from sophomore Brent Boland, junior Blake Vogelsmeier and senior Austin Hedgpeth -- in the fourth inning and added two more in the sixth on sophomore Aaron Schlatweiler's double.

Sweet Springs is due to play Calhoun today.

Softball

Sweet Springs 5, Holden 2

SWEET SPRINGS -- Sophomore Kathleen Tyler allowed only four hits and one earned run Monday as the Sweet Springs softball team claimed a 5-2 decision over visiting Holden.

The Lady Greyhounds scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lead-off walk to freshman Shelby Hayworth and junior Stephanie Krause's single began the rally. A grounder by sophomore Kristin Jones and senior Caroline Tyler's single plated both runners. Sophomore Niki Hall capped the frame with a two-run single and scored on an error.

The Lady Eagles (1-5) got a two-run triple from junior Rebecca Fisher in the sixth. Junior Calla Burden only allowed four hits and struck out 13 batters, but was tagged with the loss.

Sweet Springs (1-4) is scheduled to host Calhoun today.
