The Owls showed strength in the boys' sprints and most field events, though. Sophomore Matt Buford, second Saturday in the 100-meter dash at the Mizzou Relays, won both the 100 (11.33 seconds) and 200 (23.58). He also held down a leg of the winning 400 (46.68) and 800 (1:38.13) relays, along with juniors Emmanuel Reeders and Marty Kays and sophomore Evan Johnson.
Reeders (19 feet, 6 inches) and Johnson (18-8) were first and third, respectively, in the long jump. Senior Kyle Farrelly won the shot put (52-6.25) and was second in the discus (134-3), senior Jeff Deutsch was tops in the pole vault (12-0) -- a personal record -- and freshman Alex McGowan placed second in the high jump (5-2).
Also scoring for Marshall with third-place finishes were junior Alex Jenkins in the 3,200 (12:18.65), Johnson in the high jump (5-2) and freshman Tyrone Chess in the 110-meter high hurdles (22.99).
Senior Cortni Ervin made it three straight wins without a loss in the shot put (41-5), also placing second in the discus (82-8). That was the only win for the Lady Owls, who had second-place performances from freshmen Katie Wells in the 400 (1:15.47), Kayla Whyte in the 100 hurdles (18.45) and Susan Skogsberg in the long jump (14-11.25).
Coming in third were freshman Alesha Parker in the 100 (14.02) and 200 (31.04), sophomore Kristen McCorkle in the 100 hurdles (20.67), sophomore Kim Deutsch in the 300 hurdles (1:03.53), junior Ovaria Farrelly in the shot put (28-2) and sophomore Kaleigh Brown in the discus (80-4).
The sprint relay quartet of McCorkle, Skogsberg, Whyte and senior Rachel Willis placed second in both the 400 (55.0) and 800 (2:03) and both Deutsch and Willis cleared seven feet in the pole vault.
Marshall will return to the same track Friday for the Chillicothe Relays.
Boys' Tennis
Marshall 7, Chillicothe 2
CHILLICOTHE -- The Marshall boys' tennis team had some trouble from a couple of heavy hitters at the top of Chillicothe's line-up, but the Owls' depth held sway Tuesday during a 7-2 non-conference road win.
The Hornets (1-1) boasted a doubles team of seniors Cody Greenlaw and Morgan Saunders, which came within a win at a state medal last year.
Those two accounted for both Chillicothe wins, Saunders downing senior Taylor Scarff at No. 1 singles, 10-8, and the pair of them defeating Scarff and junior Mac Evans, 10-7, at No. 1 doubles.
Saunders took a loss to Evans at No. 2 singles, 11-9. The rest of Marshall's order had few problems, the closest match being senior Ross Crawford's 10-7 decision over junior Colton Allen at No. 4 singles.
Junior Max Bildstein (10-2) and sophomores John Van (10-1) and Ethan Murphy (10-4) gave the Owls a 5-1 lead after singles play. The doubles teams of Bildstein-Murphy (10-2) and Van-Crawford (10-2) won handily.
Marshall (5-0) will put its perfect record on the line Thursday with the first of four matches against mid-Missouri's large schools when it travels to Jefferson City.
Boys' Golf
Chillicothe 164, Marshall 191
CHILLICOTHE -- The Chillicothe boys' golf team returned two players from a squad that was seventh in last year's MSHSAA Class 2 Championships, but had only two others to go with them.
The roster-challenged Hornets, though, didn't have much trouble in their season opener Tuesday from Marshall -- which was missing six players due to conflicts with other activities. Chillicothe (1-0) breezed to a 164-191 dual victory.
All-state senior Logan Gilliland led the Hornets' charge with a two-under-par 34 at Green Hills Golf Course. Sophomore Ben Dietz carded a 40, two strokes behind the Owls' leader, senior Cody Dusenberry.
Marshall's two other varsity regulars broke 50: sophomore Brandon Hall with a 46 and senior Austin Lamparter at 49. Sophomore Christian Castle rounded out Marshall's scoring with a 58 and junior Mike Klinge posted a 62.
The Owls (2-4) are back at full strength today, competing in the Grain Valley Tournament at Blue Springs.
