Lady Owls end long soccer winless streak

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Ding, dong, the streak is dead.

The Marshall girls' soccer team ended a string of 46 matches and two complete seasons without a victory Wednesday with a 2-0 non-conference decision over visiting St. Paul.

"At times it was a long road for us over the past few years," remarked MHS head coach Josh Posegate. "I credit the girls for sticking it out through many tough times."

The Lady Owls scored their second goal of the season much like the first, during a 2-1 loss Saturday at Hannibal. Freshman Shelby McCoy followed her corner kick and, when the ball found its way to the corner of the box -- this time on a pass from senior Paige Fifer -- she knocked it into the net.

Although Marshall would go 50 minutes before adding to its lead, the defense kept the Lady Saints (0-1) from getting many solid opportunities -- limiting them to two shots on goal during the contest, both stopped by senior Xochitl Ruiz while recording her second career shutout.

"They had very few chances on goal, and those that were on goal weren't dangerous," Posegate said. "We were able to control most of the play."

Junior Vicky Renderos provided an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining, taking a 20-yard shot after getting the ball from senior Kaitlyn Chevalier. Overall, the Lady Owls put six shots on target, but missed a few other attempts.

"We had a lot of point-blank shots and close calls," Posegate said. "The girls realized what they could do and started to use their width for crosses and finishing attempts."

Marshall (1-2) heads to Fulton for an NCMC match today, hoping to generate momentum from their victory.

"Now that they have a taste of winning, I think we'll see more of it this year," Posegate asserted.
