Ferreira takes NAIA silver

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- There weren't any surprises last week for the Missouri Valley College track and field team at the NAIA Indoor Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

The Vikings had only one entry expected to come away with a medal, and he did. Junior Thiago Ferreira of Sao Paulo, Brazil, finished second in the 3,000-meter race-walk (13:44.05), coming in 2.87 seconds behind sophomore Chris Tegtmeier of Concordia (Neb.).

Ferreira was ranked second in the final NAIA performance list from his victory in the Heart of America Conference Championships two weeks earlier.

Ferreira, who was fourth a year ago, beat that time by 8.61 seconds at the national meet.

Valley didn't have any other athletes get past the preliminaries.

Sophomore Cortavious Anderson matched his seed by placing 22nd in the 60-meter dash (7.08 seconds), senior Anthony Flores was 23rd in the 5,000 (15:42.26) -- where he was ranked 36th -- and didn't enter the 3,000, and freshman William Coleman came into the shot put at No. 27 and fouled on all three throws.

The only Lady Vikings making the trip, freshman Brittany Stallworth, was ranked 26th in the 60-meter high hurdles and came in 20th (9.51 seconds).

This group, and others, are scheduled to begin the outdoor campaign March 22 at the Baker Invitational.
