Thomas Jeremy Castle, 28, of Marshall; Joel J. Harris, 38, of Slater; and Amie M. Calder, 23, of Slater were charged with attempted manufacture of a controlled substance, according to court documents.
The arrests came after a sheriff's deputy visited Harris' residence on a civil matter and saw Castle exit an outbuilding and run away, according to a report released by the sheriff's department.
The deputy reported detecting the odor of anhydrous ammonia, which is used in the production of methamphetamine.
A search of the building revealed a number of chemicals and materials commonly used in the production of methamphetamine, the deputy said.
The three were taken to the Saline County Justice Center, where they were each being held in lieu of $10,000 cash-only bonds.
The three are scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Wednesday, March 5.

To kaynmo- last time I checked, my head was clearly out of the sand but thanks for checking.
I would like to see, and I'm sure the rest of the citizens you are putting down- would like to see your "proof" of all the accusations you just made against them.
Believe me- I see the problems- but I also see them being addressed, there's work to be done behind the scenes as well, you would think as smart as you think you are, you'd realize that. It also can't happen in one day. It was your choice to move to Clyde St., if it was so bad on the "ONE" block I think you are referring to- why did you move there? You can't put down that entire street or town because of a few residents who choose not to clean up their yards/homes. I hate to tell you this- but there's going to be one of those in every town. But hey, I would think you would know that since you move around so much.
My comments were not meant for any specific person to take "personally". I'm so sad to see that one can begin to think the "Hab Center" is the reason for the sex offender situation. Generally speaking, rural areas have a higher meth rate because of that reason...there's not many people around. Remote areas, etc. Now, to the compliments due to the people who busted this thing, my heart goes out to them! They have a very dangerous job going into those situations. My husband serves our country in the military, so I can certainly appreciate and applaud anyone who serves our people on any level to protect our people. I just do not believe the Hab Center is the reason for the sex offender situation. People who do those sort of things will do this to whomever they can. They are sick people. If the Hab Center wasn't there, they would find someone else around to prey upon. They are sick predators that studies have proven are the least likely to be rehabilitated thru meds and therapy. Just take a look at Saline county alone and you will see the people listed on the registry. They are NOT residents at the Hab Center doing these things to each other. So, blaming the Hab Center is not the excuse. It is....what it is. But, once again, a big congrats to the people who made the bust. Glad you all are safe!
To the Slater Haters,
Let me start by saying that according to city-data.com 69% of Slater residents have a high school degree or higher. Secondly according to the MO Hwy Patrol Sex Offender registry there are 5 sex offenders in Slater as opposed to 31 in Marshall.
Secondly, this incident happened out in the county NEAR Slater, not in Slater if you would bother to read the article before posting such drivel.
Kaynmo - For someone who is making rash, inaccurate accusations about other people's education level you could certainly learn a thing or two in the spelling department. Maybe you should stop throwing stones if you continue to live in your glass house.
As far as the sex offender situation goes, I'm sure that our area is higher than the national average. There is a good reason for this, it's called THE HAB CENTER.
I can't believe that all anyone can do is complain and put each other down when reading a story like this.
Onpoint - Shame on you. Deputy Chamberlin doesn't even work there anymore, how about a pat on the back for the person who actually MADE this bust instead of insinuating the people who work there NOW aren't able to do their jobs.
It's a wonder the Fire, EMS and Police even show up to work everyday if this is the thanks they get.
I believe it's nationally known that states with alot of rural areas and many small towns are the perfect haven for meth labs. MO is one of them, along with being known for puppy mills. This story doesn't surprise me at all. I moved away from that state back in the very early 90's and don't regret it ever. As for the sex offender percentage comments...that's public information as well and easily found on the net. It's sickening how many sex offenders are even in Marshall and the surrounding areas. Per capita, the sexual offender rate in the area is very high. The crazy thing about it is that this is only the reported and caught offenders! Can you imagine how many have not gotten caught? So, all in all, when I see this, I am definately not surprised at any of it. I do visit family but I am always happy to return "home", which is out of the state of MO.
To prd123. U must have your head in the sand if u are not seing all the crap that goes on In slater. especially if u lived there 11 years. I lived there 4 years. I left there on perfect terms i still have friends i go visit and so do my kids. The reason we left is because i wanted a better place to raise my kids, cleaner town, more oppurtunitys as far as sports goes.
You must be one of those people who dont see whats realy going on around you. I never personally had any problems. untill moving from maple street on caseys side to clyde street. This is where i found out the hard way by having to live among the scum on that side of town how bad it realy is. maybe they keeep those people on that side of town for a reason.
Ive lived all over the U.S. because my husb job we have to travel alot sometimes. Ive seen all the bull all the crap. and all the good towns and citys You have probly never left the state in ur entire life and realy have no clue what your talking about.
Sure Slater has some good people also and they are trying. Now they are. Check the sex offender regestry and notice how many of the people ur defending are on the list.too many for a town that size theres practilcy one on every corner. check the slater statistics. a majority of the people there have less than a 8th grade education.the towns low income status shows on the slater statistics web site. check it out one theese days.its not good.
The fact that people here know of slaters bad reputation is further proof. u may not see it but i did and so do alot of others u just need to open ur eyes and pay more attention to ur surroundings and you might be suprised.
Maybe if more people in that town cared about keeping there yards cleaned up and not dumping junk all over for everyone to see like on clyde street. wich is the worst ive ever seen.getting rid of crap houses. theres alot of work to be done there. Ive never lived in a town that had so many problems.its realy sad that you dont see it.
Or are you meaning to exaggerate for effect?
I never thought I would respond on this blog- I think it's silly but I've read enough on this article. Some of you should be ashamed, do you not think of the families?? The children??
And kanymo- I'm sure Slater is glad you are gone, leave on bad terms eh? Trash? What trash? Have you been thru Slater lately? Everytime you turn around they are tearing more and more homes down to help clean up the place. Slater is one of the cleanest towns in this area.
Slater was also voted having the best streets in Saline County. Driven thru Marshall lately? Whew- hope you don't get whip lash from all the pot holes.
Slater is a very fun and active town who cares about the community including the kids... sure there's been some drug bust here and there, but it's everywhere in Saline County not just Slater. I hear more and more people from Marshall saying they wished Marshall would do just 1/2 of the things they do in Slater. They are constantly having functions...tractor pulls, blues festivals, McQueen Days, Santa Train, fishing contests for the kids, Youth Center, fall festivals that include activites for the kids, the list could go on and on. At least Slater cares about the people in their town and tries to involve EVERYONE, not just one side of the town depending on who you are and how much money you make. It's funny you say there was so much trash/drugs in that town when you lived there....I've lived here over 11 years and not once have been introduced to either.
Im suprised more meth labs have not been found in Slater. There are plenty of good people in the town but,the other 80 percent are scum. Ive never lived anywhere that had so much trash and drugs flowing thru it. Its scary. Now ive left, thank god. when i tell others i lived there they look at me and say oh god. ur kidding. ive heard stories about how bad slater is from just about everyone i know ans its all bad.
i think people ought think before opening there mouth about other people, you should clean your own back door , first before stepping on other people porch. We all arent perfect people in this world, the only person who was perfect die on the cross for us,there has been other people doing things that arent right with the law, but we dont talk about the this away, so be sure you clean your own porch first , before stepping on other people back porch ,
I hope you all have stopped and thought about the family he left behind. We are going though a lot on our own. And it doesnt help that there are people like you that are out there leaving stuipd thing like this. None of you could possibly understand what we are going though, having to walk around town with our heads hold high. There are people out there trying to make it. And no we didnt know about this. And the house fires were not caused by this. But if would like we can start some bomfires so you all dont miss him that much.......
I would hate to have to tell a firefighters family they lost a loved one over what you may call childish. There is nothing childish about losing a loved one over a senseless act. The people get hurt by the accidents this produces or the drugs that our children have access to. Either way our children suffer. Hats off to all the firefighter out there. Not many people have the courage to do what you do!!!!!
Didn't know kids were in the house when the fire started. I don't think there was, but not sure on this. Guess you would have to have been there to know that. If kids were involved I feel for the children but honestly one should not put the children in that kind of danger.
sassy98 you just disrespected every Firefighter in the world with your stupid comment.
You sure as H--L have not had your house burn or had a Firefighter nearly die trying to get to one of your best friends and his sister and then have to live with the fact that he did not get there in time.
You are a classless person!!!!!
I think everyone needs to grow up it dont matter how the fires/burnings have started. I think you are acting very childish. Those in that lived in the house with him suffered to. just think of the kids that were there.
When did Deputy Chamberlin come back to the Sheriff's Department?
I would never have expected this in Slater. I thought it was always such a "great place for growing".
It will be hard to handle the fact that there might not be anymore Harris Annual House Burnings in the Slater Area. Hats off to the Saline County Sheriff's Deputies to a job well done on getting more crime out of the county!
And we wonder how all the fires started, I hope it is obivious to all now....
