Leona M. Echelmeyer, 87, of Concordia, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at The Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Concordia, with William W. Harlow officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City. Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Lincoln, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin G. Bruns and Verna Marie Harms Bruns. She was raised in the Sweet Springs area, where she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a 1939 graduate of Sweet Springs High School. On March 24, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan., she married Omar M. Echelmeyer, who preceded her in death on April 8, 2000. She had lived in Concordia the last 24 years and was active in the Concordia Senior Center, where she had served on the board, as well as an active member of local quilting clubs. Prior to moving to Concordia, she and her husband lived in Warsaw, where she was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, Warsaw Senior Center and a founding member of Dam Site Dancers. Prior to living in Warsaw, she and her husband lived in Kansas City for many years, where she was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and a volunteer in the chaplain's office at KU Medical Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Anne Echelmeyer of Concordia; one daughter-in-law; one grandson; one granddaughter; and several great and great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Danny Echelmeyer; two grandchildren; and one brother, Benjamin Bruns.
