There's physical therapy; emotional therapy; psychological therapy; exercise therapy; therapy for your kids and your house pets and your horse; smooth, hot stone therapy; and aroma therapy.
The other day I heard someone extolling the virtues of colon therapy. I'm not sure what that is, but it doesn't sound like something I'd want to experience at this point in my life.
The fact is, there's another kind of therapy that is just as important, or even more so, as those mentioned above.
I believe we have all experienced times when negative circumstances so overshadowed the good things of life that we actually felt such a burden on our hearts that we were almost paralyzed by the suffering. Sometimes we can become physically and emotionally drained because of our circumstances. Sometimes it gets so bad that even our soul -- our mind, will and emotions - needs healing. We need what one speaker has called "soul therapy."
During those times, we need to realize that our God is not only our heavenly Father, but He is also our Provider. He cares about even the smallest details of our lives. When we put our trust in Him, we find that He is an expert at healing our hurts and pains and providing restoration.
His Word is the remedy for every situation that exalts itself above His desire for our lives. The Bible says that the law of the Lord is perfect and that it restores the whole person. Through prayer and meditation on the promises of God we can find healing and restoration for all that troubles our souls.
I am not saying what we experience is not real. Pressure from outside circumstances and emotional distress are rampant in this day and age, even for those in the church. But when we accept the love of Christ and the free gift of eternal life that He offers, a deposit of supernatural power is made on the inside of us that enables us to get through and past all that the world has to throw at us. Combined with the natural abilities God gave us, this blessing gives us abilities we did not have before. The combination takes us to a new level of spirituality where the broken places in our lives can be restored and our souls can find refreshing and healing; genuine soul therapy.
We need to remember to pray to God about those things that weigh on your hearts and disrupt our souls. We haven't been asked to keep our frustrations inside of us. Our heavenly Father wants us to unload our cares on Him. That's when we will find the peace and relief that too many of us seek.
God cares for each of us. He is interested in our lives and in the tough situations and down times that we face. When we cast our burdens on Him, it will be the beginning of the soul therapy so many truly need.
If we believe in God, then we must believe there is hope.
