Joseph C. Giger, 84, of Slater, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater. Father Michael Penn will officiate. Bethany Weiker, organist, will play "Meditation," "'Ere You Left Your Room" and "Largo." Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Murdock, Kip Drummond, Alan Clements, Clay Vogl, John Markovich and Kenny Vogl. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Heart Association.
Born March 19, 1923, in rural Slater, he was the son of the late Nicholas J. and Mary Kruse Giger. On Oct. 30, 1970, in Slater, he married Anna Marie Jackson, who preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 1994. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater, where he served as an altar boy and instructor for altar boys most of his life. He worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance Co. for 21 years and was a caseworker with Saline County Division of Family Services for 18 years.
He is survived by one son, Tim Giger of Columbia; two grandsons; and two sisters, Edna Giger of Columbia and Ella Yontz of Shawnee Mission, Kan.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Giger, and two sisters, Stella Giger and Freda Giger.
