Junior Rachel Gonzalez teed off with 12 points during the Lady Wildcats' 24-4 second-period run. While the Lady Greyhounds pounded the ball inside to sophomores Kristin Jones and Rachel Thornton for 14 of their 20 points during the third quarter, they were unable to cut the deficit to under seven points.
"Slater played a good game and deserved to win," Jones said. "We have had very few games like this, and hopefully this will be the last."
Jones and Thornton each ended up with 10 points, Thornton getting a double-double with 10 rebounds, for Sweet Springs (14-7) -- which hosts fourth-ranked Crest Ridge today.
Gonzalez' 19 points led all scorers, with senior Erika Yager coming off the bench for 16 points to help the Lady 'Cats (8-13) -- scheduled to entertain Salisbury today.
In the nightcap, Sweet Springs was unable to contain senior Aric Falls -- joining a club with growing membership. Falls reached the 20-point mark for the fifth game in a row, his 26 points leading Slater to a 69-53 victory.
The Greyhounds held a three-point edge heading into the fourth quarter, but Falls -- who is averaging 22.3 points over the nine games since returning to action following a hand injury -- scored 10 points and senior Kyle Durham chipped in with six during the final frame, the 'Cats closing with a 25-11 tear.
Sophomore Billy Martin's 21 points led Sweet Springs (7-13).
Durham had 18 points and senior Austin Foster added 14 for Slater (7-15).
