Heart attack victims often don't have 12 minutes to spare.
Thanks to Blackburn First Responders, Saline Countians who live in Blackburn, Mt. Leonard, Elmwood and the immediate area don't have to worry about that.
One or more of the Blackburn First Responders can be there in less than half the time to provide basic emergency care.
The group's leader, Joe Campbell of Blackburn, is the emergency management director for the town.
Like all of the First Responders, Campbell is a volunteer. In addition to their emergency duties, first responders have also been fundraisers for area residents who need help after an accident (a house fire, for example) or a natural disaster, like a tornado.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, it's the First Responders who need some help.
A chili and chicken soup lunch and dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Blackburn's American Legion.
Events through the day include a silent auction, games and prizes for children and delicious deserts. The Air Evac "Lifeteam" will also be on hand for helicopter rides, weather permitting.
Carryouts for the dinner are available; freewill donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be used to purchase and maintain equipment for emergency medical services.
