The Missouri Valley College women's basketball team took control during the second half Thursday to shake off pesky Stephens College for a 76-57 non-conference home win.
There were six lead changes during the first half, but the Lady Vikings went into the break up by eight points. Although sophomore Ali Roper dropped in a pair of three-pointers for the Stars early in the second half, Valley broke away with a 21-5 run.
Senior Bonnie Johnson hit two shots from the field and a free throw and freshman Jessica Najarain finished a fast break off a steal by senior Theresa Gittens then followed her own missed shot for a put-back during the stretch, at the end of which the Lady Vikings held a commanding 61-38 cushion.
Junior Tia LaFavor had 11 points and freshman Melissa Perez added 10 for Stephens (10-10), which committed 28 turnovers and was bludgeoned on the boards by a 58-33 margin.
Johnson's 20 points, 12 rebounds and four steals topped Valley -- which had three others in double figures: junior Imogene Dooley (11 points), junior Ashley Sequeira (10) and freshman Brianne Langkrahr (10) of Concordia.
The Lady Vikings (11-11) will be on the Heart of America Conference road with the men's team Saturday to take on Avila.
