Ida L. Schelp, 99, formerly of Emma, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Bright Glade Convalescent Center in Memphis, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Emma. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Sweet Springs. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Emma. She was born June 23, 1908, in the rural Sweet Springs, the daughter of the late Gustav and Louise Freimann Stuerke. She lived all but the last eight years of her life in Emma. She was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Emma, being baptized, confirmed and married there. On April 15, 1928, she married Herbert "Pick" Schelp, who preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1969. She spent all of her life as a housewife, providing many services to her church, retaining her membership there in the Dorcas Society. Among many services to the community, she served for years as a Gray Lady for the Community Hospital in Sweet Springs. In January of 2000 she moved to Memphis to be near her son.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol Twaddle of California; one son, Richard H. Schelp of Memphis; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
