I mean, it was bad enough when my husband and his friends used that kind of language. But they were away from me, away from "polite company" and it didn't seem to hurt anything. But now I realize it's not just my husband, but my two sons as well. And now it's too late to stop it.
Yes, now when my three farmers (husband and two sons) speak, I have no idea what they are talking about. There seems to be a "technical" communication gap. (You thought I was talking about something else didn't you?)
For example, son #1 comes in from college, (now realize, he's been gone for two weeks).
Mom: "Hi, son. How's school?"
"Fine."
Mom: "How are your classes?"
"Fine."
Mom: "Are you keeping up with homework?"
"Yep."
Mom: "Anything else new going on?"
"Nope."
So, of course I give up, realizing that the poor boy must be so tired from all his efforts in school and the long drive home, he just isn't ready to talk!
A few seconds later, his father and brother walk in.
Dad: "Hi, son, how's it going."
"Fine Dad. Hey I realized that the 5976B2427 corn you planted on the south 40 was a little taller than the 3329B76 you planted north of the tracks. Is that the same corn you sprayed with the extra Halex GT 43278, or was that the field you sprayed the Degree ATTDF 1098 at 3 ounces on. Wasn't that planted on 4/25 when you had the 8230 on the 1790, and then had the problems with the stalk roll wheels? Or was that on 4/27 we had to use the 8100 on the 1790 and slowed it down a little to 4 mph? You know I also noticed some nodules on the 53PKL222234. They looked like they were eaten by the westerns, was it the variant, annual or perennial? Wasn't that a triple stack or was it a double stack? Herculex 897BD65 or Herculex 549JK9999?"
Well, you get the idea. This kind of talk goes on for what seems like an hour. I try to join in, sounding smart.
"Oh you mean the corn that had the pretty green color. It's about knee high. It's in those nice straight rows ..."
They stare at me in unison.
Oldest son goes on (no longer too tired to talk apparently): "I noticed on the way home, the dealer had a 4930 hooked up to a P and K bed. Did you know that new tractor has 700 H.P., comes with 184442's, turbo twin cams. Would the 42's on a 46 work? Would we rather have the 18.43345's? Then I saw they had in a 4520 that looked like it had been overhauled. It had an Unverferth cab, axle duals ..."
Interrupting I say, "I saw the prettiest coat at the store the other day, on sale. Yes, I think I'll get it. I need a new one. Mine's worn out. It's black wool, and has the prettiest buttons ..."
Interrupted again.
"Hey Dad, I passed a load of J.D. combines with the new 612 and 600C stalkmasters. They also had a 9660 WTS and the 9550 STS and 612C StalkMaster Chopping Corn Heads. I think I saw some sidehills with W55678's ..."
Huh?
Defeated and obviously lost in a great big communication gap, I give up. I just put food on the table and listen.
After 30 more minutes of the foreign language, I'm awakened from my bored stupor, when I finally hear something, uh, familiar.
"Thanks mom, supper was really good."
Now, that's language I understand!
