Prep Hoops Round-up/Lady 'Hounds romp in tourney debut

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

WINDSOR -- The Sweet Springs girls' basketball team responded to their disappointing Homecoming loss Friday to I-70 Conference rival St. Paul by whipping Calhoun, 66-31, Monday in the first round of the Windsor Tournament.

Five Lady Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by junior Stephanie Krause with 13 points. That was matched by Melanie Hendricks of the Lady Eagles (1-11), who found themselves buried when Sweet Springs went on a 17-4 run after coming out of halftime with a 14-point lead.

The Lady 'Hounds collected 50 rebounds, including 30 offensive boards, and got a double-double from sophomore Jodie Harris with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Sweet Springs (11-3) will play Tipton in Thursday's semifinal round.

Bunceton 59, Malta Bend 25

BUNCETON -- Malta Bend put up a fight early, but was eventually overwhelmed by host Bunceton in Monday's pool play opener in the CCAA Tournament.

The Lady Dragons only led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, but a 19-5 spree during the second frame put the game out of reach for a Malta Bend club which averages a mere 17.0 points per game. Senior Hillary Kahle and sophomore Courtney Held each scored 10 points for Bunceton (7-7).

Senior Jerrian Johnson hit four three-pointers for a game-high 16 points, exceeding her season-best 14 points scored when the Lady Tigers (0-11) played on the same court in December. Malta Bend will be back there Thursday to face Jamestown.

Boys

Tipton 90, Sweet Springs 62

TIPTON -- Tipton didn't mind one bit playing the wide-open style employed by the Sweet Springs boys, scoring 30 first-quarter points en route to a 90-62 victory Monday in the first round of the Windsor Tournament.

Although the Greyhounds held their own during the middle two frames, the Cardinals poured it on at the end with a 24-14 close-out during the final period. Tipton (9-4) had five players in double figures, led by senior Frederick Franken with 18 points and 14 points from senior Zac Williams.

Sophomore Billy Martin knocked down five shots from beyond the arc for a game-high 21 points. Sweet Springs (5-9) also got 13 points from sophomore Zach Thomas, while senior Travis Hinck dished out seven assists.

The 'Hounds will have to wait until Saturday to play next, for the consolation trophy in the seven-team tourney.

Higginsville 59, Slater 25

SLATER -- The Slater boys haven't won yet this calendar year, so being matched against top-seeded Higginsville -- ranked fourth in Class 3 -- in Monday's opener of the 27th Wildcat Classic wasn't exactly what the doctor ordered for the Purple.

The Huskers (14-1) didn't disappoint their boosters during a 59-25 win, getting a pair of three-pointers from senior Spencer Rhodes while rolling to a 16-5 start. By halftime, it was 33-12, and only grew from there. Rhodes finished with 22 points.

Senior Aric Falls scored eight of his 10 points in the second half for the Wildcats (4-13), who have lost six straight since their Dec. 29 victory over Northwest of Hughesville in the New Franklin Tournament.

Slater takes on Pilot Grove, No. 9 in the Class 1 poll, in Wednesday's consolation semifinal.
