The Lady Wildcats had been unable to hang on to a slim lead down the stretch Friday against Paris, losing a 54-51 overtime decision. Three days later, Slater went on the road and came back from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat the Lady Coyotes, 42-40, for its first Lewis and Clark Conference victory of the season.
Sophomore Tessa Henderson and junior Alex Kennedy combined for 19 of Paris' 23 first-half points, but only Henderson -- who wound up with a game-high 20 points -- maintained her pace after the break.
Meanwhile, the Lady 'Cats began chipping into the spread. Junior Rachel Gonzalez had seven points during the third period as Slater pulled to within two points. Gonzalez and sophomore Niki Kruger connected early in the final frame, but the biggest blow was a three-pointer by freshman Ana Jackson.
Although the Lady 'Cats missed four of seven free throws during the fourth quarter, they were able to fend off Paris (3-10, 1-3 L&C).
Gonzalez finished with 13 points, Kruger had 11 and senior Erika Yager contributed eight points and nine rebounds -- Slater controlling the boards by a 37-19 margin. The Lady 'Cats (6-8, 1-4) visit Salisbury for a league contest Friday.
Tina-Avalon 76, Malta Bend 18
MALTA BEND -- Fresh from claiming the Braymer Tournament championship, unbeaten Tina-Avalon was not disposed to fiddle around with winless Malta Bend during Monday's non-conference road contest -- and didn't, rolling to a 76-18 victory.
The Lady Dragons got 10 first-quarter points from sophomore Darcy Jenkins to blow out to a 26-1 lead, and -- although junior Jerrian Johnson drained three three-pointers during the second period -- the Lady Tigers were unable to get closer.
Senior Brittany Maasdam rang up 22 points for Tina-Avalon (11-0), which had 10 of its 12 players score.
Johnson hit another bomb during the third quarter to finish with 12 points for Malta Bend (0-8), which travels to Norborne today.
Boys
Paris 70, Slater 43
PARIS -- With a chance to move into a tie for first place in the Lewis and Clark Conference boys' standings, Paris wasn't about to look past visiting Slater on Monday -- even though the Coyotes had easily beaten the Purple three days earlier.
Although the Wildcats came out firing, Paris calmed them down with a 21-6 second-quarter run and won, 70-43.
Senior Joe Gilliam scored 18 points and sophomore Jon Gilliam added 17 points each for the Coyotes (9-3, 4-0 L&C).
Slater (4-11, 0-5) got 15 points and 12 rebounds from senior Aric Falls and 14 points and 10 boards from senior Kyle Durham while dropping its fifth straight game.
Tina-Avalon 64, Malta Bend 52
MALTA BEND -- Tina-Avalon used a 35-19 run during the middle two frames Monday to defeat the scrappy Malta Bend boys' basketball team, 64-52.
The Tigers began the non-conference home game by gaining a 17-13 first-quarter lead behind eight points from junior guard Ryan Armstrong.
However, the Dragons -- who finished second in the Braymer Tournament over the weekend -- got 10 points from freshman Logan Holmer during a 22-point second period.
Holmer hit three more shots during the third quarter and wound up with 23 points for Tina-Avalon (10-1).
Armstrong's final count was 22 points, with sophomore Tim Trelow adding 10 for Malta Bend (1-7).
