Trooper arrests 2 armed robbery suspects in Marshall

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) Sgt. Woody Hicks apprehended two armed robbery suspects at 6:36 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Murphy's USA gas station, just east of Wal-Mart in Marshall.

According to a press release from Carrollton Police Department, at 5:51 p.m., Carroll County 911 dispatched officers to the Pamida store in Carrollton for a reported armed robbery.

A black male subject wearing a trench coat exhibited a shotgun and demanded money from the cash register. The subject fled on foot.

The report stated, "Thanks to the help of eyewitnesses, a direction of travel and the description of a white semi cab were broadcasted statewide."

Hicks was in his office at Saline County Justice Facility when he heard the broadcast from Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop A. He then left the office to look for the suspects.

He said he knew Carrollton was only 30 miles away and the suspects were seen heading south on U.S. Highway 65. When he turned onto North U.S. 65 off Highway 20, the description he received of the getaway vehicle matched the third vehicle he met on Highway 65. He turned around and called for backup.

The suspects stopped at the gas station and Hicks pursued the arrest. Backup had not arrived yet.

He arrested Darryl E. Young, 53, of Miami and Charles O. Young, 34, of Lebanon.

When arrested, MSHP's charges were felony armed robbery, felony armed criminal action, felony unlawful use of a firearm and felony possession of a firearm.

"The court will file whatever charges they deem worthy," Hicks said.

The weapon and most of the money was recovered, according to the press release.

As of Jan. 13, the 8th Judicial Circuit Court has charged both men with the class A felony of robbery in the first degree, unclassified felony of armed criminal action and two counts of the class D felony of endangering the welfare of a child in the second degree.

According to Carrollton Police Chief Donald King, the child endangerment charges were brought because two children were in the store at the time of the robbery.

The Youngs are being held at Carroll County Jail on a $500,000 cash or surety bond each. They had not posted bail as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15.

As the investigation continues, additional charges may be filed, according to law enforcement officials.

I didn't realize the court was who deemed charges "worthy"?!?!?
