WARRENSBURG -- The Marshall girls' basketball team jumped on Warrensburg from the opening tip-off Friday en route to a dominating 58-22 non-conference road win.
The Lady Owls opened the game with a 17-4 first-quarter run, and followed it with a 15-2 second period to go into halftime with an insurmountable 32-6 lead. The struggling Lady Tigers (1-9) were out-rebounded 35-17 and made only nine of 35 field-goal attempts.
Junior Jessica Harriman scored 15 points and collected eight rebounds off the bench, with senior Paige Fifer leading Marshall's starters with 10 points. Senior Amy Durham contributed seven points and eight assists and senior Courtney Henley had eight points and eight boards.
The Lady Owls (4-4) meet Warrensburg again Wednesday to open play in the McDonald's Lady Tiger Classic at Sedalia.
'Cats fall twice in L&C twinbill
SLATER -- Paris finished with a 9-6 spurt in overtime Friday to complete a 54-51 come-from-behind Lewis and Clark Conference road victory over the Slater girls' basketball team.
Junior Alex Kennedy scored 14 points and sophomore Tessa Henderson had 13 for the Lady Coyotes (3-9, 1-2 L&C), who rallied from a five-point halftime deficit after losing the second quarter, 18-7.
The Lady Wildcats (5-8, 0-4) were led by senior Erika Yager with 17 points, with senior Hannah Boyer and junior Rachel Gonzalez each chipping in 10 points.
Sophomore Jon Gilliam's 29 points were the key to Paris' win in the boys' nightcap, 75-49.
It was close for a while, but then Gilliam scored 15 of the Coyotes' 24 second-quarter points to take a 42-31 lead into the break. Paris (8-3, 3-0), which also got 16 points from Gilliam's older brother -- senior Joe Gilliam -- out-scored the hosts 33-18 during the second half.
Senior Aric Falls returned to action after a two-game absence to tally 19 points and 11 rebounds for the 'Cats (4-10, 0-4).
The two schools hook up again today, Slater going on the road to make up one of December's snow postponements.
