Santa Fe boys, girls fourth at LaCoMo fest

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

CONCORDIA -- The Santa Fe boys' basketball program's recent struggles against rival Concordia continued Friday at the Lafayette County Tournament in Concordia.

The Chiefs let go of a six-point lead during the final six minutes of their final pool match to drop a 54-48 decision, their first loss since being beaten by the Orioles in the championship game of the I-70 Conference Tournament. Concordia has won the last seven games in the series, stretching back to a Santa Fe win in the league meet in 2004.

Sophomore Jeff Knipmeyer came off the bench to bury back-to-back three-pointers during the third period to put the Chiefs ahead, 38-32. However, the Orioles scored nine straight points during a 13-4 run, senior Dylan Clayton hitting a couple of key shots despite playing with four personal fouls.

Knipmeyer's third trey of the half tied the score at 45-all with 2:30 left in the game, but inside buckets by seniors John Miller and Jacob Evans -- along with a pair of Miller free throws -- allowed the seventh-ranked Orioles (11-1) to pull away.

Miller (18 points), Evans (15) and Clayton (14) each reached double figures for Concordia. The Chiefs' only players to achieve that were junior Taylor Wesley with 14 points and Knipmeyer with 10.

Santa Fe had a chance to walk away with a third-place trophy Saturday, but Wellington-Napoleon went on a 40-17 second-half run to take a 73-45 victory.

The Tigers (8-1) got 24 points from sophomore Kent Hendrix, 16 during the second half, to avenge a one-point loss to the Chiefs in November.

Junior Taylor Wesley scored 15 points for Santa Fe (6-3).

The Lady Chiefs also reached the third-place match, beating Wellington-Napoleon, 45-29, in their last pool game Friday.

Santa Fe had nearly as many attempts from the free-throw line (44) as from the field (45), but only made 17 of them. Fortunately, the Lady Tigers (1-7) were too busy turning the ball over to threaten, coughing it up 35 times.

Still, it wasn't until a 17-10 fourth-quarter surge that the Lady Chiefs were able to put the game away. Santa Fe was led by junior Dani Heimsoth's 14 points and nine points and 10 rebounds from sophomore Lauren Aversman.

The trophy round, however, was decided by halftime -- Concordia pulling out to a 17-point lead to defeat the Lady Chiefs, 63-47.

Senior Megan Wood and sophomore Tori Kopp combined for 30 points to pace the Lady Orioles (7-3).

Santa Fe (2-7) got 14 points and seven boards from Heimsoth.

The Chiefs will play at Higginsville today.
