Nelson girl bitten by racoon Monday, Dec. 31; Animal being tested for rabies

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Ashley Hursman, 10, of Nelson, was released from Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall Monday, Dec. 31, after treatment for a raccoon bite on her leg.

Hursman was with her father, Tony Hursman, taking pictures of raccoons they had trapped, when the animal bit her on the left calf. The incident took place in a field off Highway AA near Nelson.

According to a report from Saline County Sheriff's Department, the elder Hursman shot the raccoon, which was then delivered to Jane Waller, DVM, for rabies testing.

Results of the rabies test, which is not done locally, could be available as early as Thursday, Jan. 3
