James Vernon "Pappy" Hicks, 86, of Marshall, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Mar-Saline Manor in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with Rev. Vernon Maxted officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to the Marshall Police Department. Born March 19, 1921, in Slater, he was the son of the late James Roy Hicks and Bessie Webb Hicks. He married Dorothy Pearl Weaver, who preceded him in death on Sept. 2, 2000. He had lived in Marshall most of his life and retired as assistant police chief for the Marshall Police Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jean Lale Sears of Chillicothe; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Scharnhorst of Kansas City; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy McElfresh, Doris Laxson and Lillian O'Donnell; and one brother, John Hicks.
