Lester H. Williams Sr., 88, of Marshall, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at The Living Center in Marshall.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, with funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at Sweeney-Reser-Wills Funeral Home in Marshall. Rev. Vernon Maxted and Rev. Wayne Doolin will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. Organist Ramona Bullington will play "How Great Thou Art," "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers will be Jaimie Cole, Jimmy Cole, Chris Davis, Franklin Davis Jr., Timmy Davis, Ashley Ragland, John Ragland, Crystal Williams and Lester Williams III. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Lee Hunt, John Briscoe, Ralph Snyder, Franklin Davis Sr., Bill Ragland, Phillip Hayes, Tom Kelsey and Mike Caton.
He was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Cooper County, the son of the late Ernest and Cora Judd Williams. On June 2, 1951, in Marshall, he married Roma Belle Short, who preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 2004. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a resident of Marshall for most of his life and had worked as a self-employed painter for many years. He had attended First Baptist Church and Bethany Baptist Church in Marshall.
Survivors include four daughters, Beckie Davis of Marshall, Vickie L. Williams of the home, Ramona Ragland and Alesia Cole, both of Marshall; two brothers, John Williams of Marshall and Franklin Williams of Butler; two sisters, Rosa Lee Snyder of Clever and Mary Ann Briscoe of St. Charles; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; one sister; one son, Lester "Buster" H. Williams Jr. on May 12, 1988; and one infant great-granddaughter.
