V.E. "Cap" Grimes Jr., of Slater, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Rev. Jess Spurgin officiated. Pallbearers were Edward Grimes, Beno Messer, Ed Ballew, Harry Whitlock, Robert Brucks and David Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Todd Jeffries, Howard Jones, Kenneth Morton, Harold Eddy and Ed Ohlendorf. Memorials are suggested to Slater United Methodist Church or Saline Animal League in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born June 21, 1914, in rural Slater, he was the son of the late V.E. Grimes Sr. and Martha Hains Grimes. On Aug. 2, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan., he married Shirley Johnson, who survives of the home. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, north of Gilliam, and a longtime rural Slater farmer until his retirement.
Also surviving is his daughter, Gayle Sillin and her husband, Fred, of Carrollton; one grandson, Kyle Sillin; his sister-in-law, Mary Lee Brucks of Park Hill; four nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Manning Grimes; and one sister, Nadine Buchanan.
