Prep Girls' Hoops Round-up/Lady Chiefs win season, I-70 tourney debut

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

ALMA -- Whatever Dani Heimsoth's been eating lately, maybe Santa Fe head girls' basketball coach Tina Burton should buy it by the case.

Heimsoth went off for a career-high 26 points Monday as the fifth-seeded Lady Chiefs upset No. 4 St. Paul, 55-38, in the first round of the I-70 Conference Tournament at Alma. Santa Fe blanked the Saints, 11-0, in the first quarter -- Heimsoth unloading for 11 points -- but saw that margin narrow to four heading into the final frame.

Heimsoth went to work again, starting with a conventional three-point play during a nine-point frame. St. Paul hacked away trying to stop the clock for a possible comeback, but all it managed to do was have four starters foul out while the Lady Chiefs convert an adequate 12 of 22 from the free-throw line.

Junior Tony Kramer had 10 points to pace the Saints (0-1).

Sophomore Lauren Aversman posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, with freshman Molly Sander also pulling down 11 boards. Junior Becca Woodson had 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals for Santa Fe (1-0) -- which takes on top-seeded Crest Ridge in Wednesday's semifinal round.

Concordia 38, Sweet Springs 38

ALMA -- Sweet Springs played strong defense to stay in its first-round game Monday in the I-70 Conference Tournament at Alma, but didn't shoot well enough to win.

Concordia used a 14-9 spurt during the third period to overcome a one-point halftime lead en route to a 38-33 decision. Senior Jaala Nierman scored 10 of her game-high 19 points during the second half, the Lady Orioles (1-0) making all four free throws down the stretch to hold on to the lead.

Junior Stephanie Krause had 13 points for the Lady Greyhounds (0-1), who shot only 23.2 percent from the field. Sweet Springs, which got eight rebounds from sophomore Rachel Thornton, plays Windsor in Wednesday's consolation semifinal.

Westran 52, Slater 25

GLASGOW -- All-state senior Kayla Rice lit Slater up for 27 points as top-seeded Westran coasted to a 52-25 victory Monday in the first round of the Glasgow Tournament.

The Lady Hornets (2-0), who also got 14 points from junior Becca Schemmer, blew out to a 15-point first quarter lead and never looked back.

Sophomore Hannah Doherty came off the bench to tally six points to top the Lady Wildcats, who also got three-pointers from seniors Jessica Fleetwood and Erika Yager. Slater (1-1) plays Glasgow in the consolation semifinals Wednesday.
