The original money for the scholarship came from donations and memorial gifts in honor of Houston, who died in a vehicle accident after his freshman year at Marshall High School. Since then, an annual cattle drive, steak fry and auction has been held in his honor, raising even more funds, enabling even more scholarships to be handed out.
In 2007, which would have been Houston's graduating year, 21 students received a total of $13,000 in scholarships from the fund.
