Prep Grid Round-up/No. 4 Tipton sinks Sweet Springs, 47-0

Monday, October 29, 2007

SWEET SPRINGS -- Sweet Springs head football coach Tim Smith can relate to Clint Hurdle's plight.

Just as the Colorado manager was helpless while watching his team steamrolled in four World Series games by the Boston Red Sox' machine, Smith's Greyhounds "ran into one" Friday during a 47-0 home loss to fourth-ranked Tipton to eliminate them from contention in the Class 1, District 8 race.

"They're the best team we've played all year," a schedule which included top-ranked I-70 Conference champion Orrick, Smith remarked. "They just don't make mistakes."

The Cardinals went the entire game without either a turnover or penalty, despite emptying their bench during the second half. A 35-0 halftime lead made for what Smith called "the quickest game I've ever been a part of."

Sophomore Keil Allison's 55-yard touchdown run on Tipton's first play was followed by three straight scores by junior speedster Tanner Edwards -- the first on a 34-yard pass from senior Trey Allison on third down and 17 yards to go and the next two on runs of 79 and 14 yards.

Senior Brad Knipp finished the night for the offensive starters with six minutes remaining in the first half with a 9-yard TD run. A 38-yard dash by junior Kendal Williams and junior Weston Wood's 10-yard rumble capped the Cardinals' scoring.

Head coach Tony Braby, who guided Sweet Springs to its only Show-Me Bowl appearance in 1985, won his sixth game in a row against his old club. Tipton (9-0, 2-0 district) will host Concordia on Friday for the district title, which the Cardinals have won five of the last six years.

The ‘Hounds (5-4, 0-2), who close the season Friday at St. Paul, had only 78 yards in total offense - 24 on a pass from senior Chris Dickinson to senior James DeWeese.

Orrick 53, Santa Fe 6

ALMA -- Another offensive juggernaut was in overdrive Friday at Santa Fe, where No. 1 Orrick clinched the Class 1, District 13 and I-70 Conference championships with a 53-6 victory.

Senior Taylor Eubank ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns and sophomore Aaron Blyth scored twice while racking up 106 rushing yards for the Bearcats, who gained 420 yards on the ground. Eubank took it in from 24, 43 and 53 yards in the first half, with junior Joe Kaufman adding a 13-yard TD run.

The Chiefs (4-5, 2-4 I-70, 1-1 district) prevented the whitewash when senior Billy Balcom broke off a 49-yard sprint early in the fourth quarter.

Orrick (9-0, 7-0, 2-0) will close the regular season Friday by hosting Wentworth Military Academy, with its fourth playoff appearance in five years already assured.

Senior Kenzie Thorp made 12 tackles and juniors Justus Hostetter and Bobby Wood has 11 each for Santa Fe, which finishes the schedule Friday at home against Wellington-Napoleon.

Fayette 49, Slater 6

SLATER -- Fayette is only one win from its first post-season berth since 1994, having disposed of Lewis and Clark Conference rival Slater on Friday, 49-6, to go 2-0 in Class 1, District 14.

Aptly-named senior Breeze Farr swirled like the wind through the Wildcats' defense, capping the visitors' game-opening drive with 49-yard touchdown run. However, senior Aric Falls sprinted 68 yards on Slater's first snap to tie the score.

After that, though, it was all Falcons. Junior Ryan Sherman struck from 20 yards out, Farr went in from the 2-yard line, senior Shavez Eubanks caught a 42-yard pass from senior Miles Westhues and sophomore Ethan Boulden scored on an 8-yard run for a 37-6 halftime lead.

Farr finished with 132 rushing yards and three touchdowns, the last on a 52-yard breakaway with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Fayette (7-2, 3-1 L&C, 2-0 district) can only be denied a playoff spot if it loses Friday to Westran, and that would have to be by at least nine points or if the ‘Cats upset Salisbury.

Falls ran for 132 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with a hand injury. Slater (0-9, 0-4, 0-2) will close the season at Salisbury.
