Shots fired into empty Miami school

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

A double-pane window in the third grade classroom and walls and a metal dry-erase board in the fourth grade classroom at Miami School were damaged recently by bullets fired through the windows, according to a report from Saline County Sheriff’s Department.

The damage was discovered by teacher Michelle Ess at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22. School was not in session when the shots were fired, according to the report.

The investigating officer recovered fragments of a .22 caliber bullet in the third grade classroom. Two shots were fired into the fourth grade classroom, but no bullet fragments were found.

The report indicates all three bullets impacted the west side of the school building within a very small area of less than three feet.

School officials were not available for comment at press time.

Sheriff Wally George said, “I can’t believe somebody could be that ignorant,” and asked that anyone with information about the shooting contact his office at (660) 886-5511.

The identity of anyone providing information will be kept confidential, he said.
