That the Greyhounds were even close enough to salvage the victory was amazing, considering that the Cougars took their defense to the woodshed -- accumulating 429 total yards. Senior Chad Seigried ran for 124 yards and passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, hitting senior Micky Wyatt on 24- and 7-yard tosses which took Crest Ridge into the late stages of the third period with a 19-7 lead.
"Our defense didn't play that well, and that's been a strength for us all year," noted Sweet Springs head coach Tim Smith. "They took it to us."
However, senior Chris Dickinson led a rally. Dickinson, who had connected with senior Travis Hinck on a 28-yard pass for the 'Hounds' lone first-half score, dashed 46 yards to close the margin to five points heading into the final frame.
Sweet Springs put together a seven-play, 88-yard drive -- getting 26 yards on a run by senior James DeWeese -- to pull ahead on a 3-yard DeWeese run with a little under eight minutes remaining.
The Cougars (2-4, 2-4 I-70) penetrated deep into home territory on their next series, but fumbled the ball at the 15-yard line with 3:30 remaining. The 'Hounds (5-1, 3-1) were then able to run out the clock.
"We're catching all these teams at the wrong time, young teams coming off big wins," Smith remarked -- harkening to the previous week's 20-14 decision at Braymer. "We were fortunate to get the win, but we got the win."
Windsor 42, Santa Fe 36
ALMA -- Having snapped a 28-game losing streak two weeks ago, Windsor was ready to win again Friday -- the victims being the defenseless Santa Fe Chiefs, suffering a 42-36 I-70 Conference setback.
Two-first-half touchdowns by senior Garrick Baldwin, who rushed for 135 yards during the game, and senior Kenzie Thorp's 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Hunter Rolf sent Santa Fe into intermission with a 36-30 lead.
However, the Chiefs could not contain senior Kody Johnson. After breaking off TD runs of 62 and 75 yards during the first half, Johnson dashed 81 yards early in the third quarter to allow the Greyhounds to catch up.
Windsor (2-4, 2-4 I-70) went ahead for good on sophomore Matt Madole's 17-yard run with 1:57 remaining in the game, the Greyhounds having blanked Santa Fe during the second half.
"We kept moving the ball the whole game, but turned it over three times during the second half," explained Chiefs head coach Andy Frerking. "That was probably the difference."
The two teams combined for 736 rushing yards and 42 first downs, sophomore Ross Tieman running for 102 yards and a touchdown for Santa Fe (2-4, 1-3).
Marceline 15, Slater 0
MARCELINE -- Struggling Marceline scored all of its points during the first half Friday, the defending Lewis and Clark Conference champion Tigers (2-4, 2-2 L&C) handing visiting Slater its 16th straight loss, 15-0.
No additional information was available on the game at press time. The Wildcats (0-6, 0-2) will host Braymer for Homecoming this week.
