Football Contest/Monday, September 10
When Graceland knocked off third-ranked Missouri Valley College, 28-23 Saturday at Gregg-Mitchell Field, it not only burst the Vikings' 11-game Heart of America Conference win streak.
The upset also threw The Marshall Democrat-News' Football Contest into a tizzy, since nobody picked the Yellowjackets to prevail. All 11 ballots with only one wrong answer had that one in the minus column, while seven of the 11 two-miss entries chose Valley and Warrensburg -- which saw its four-game win streak against Marshall ended, 28-14.
Eight of the 11 players -- Don Bowlin, Tommy Conger, Brian Embree, John Gibson, Keith Jacobs, Greg Rudd, Elmer Van Buren and Lindsay Washington -- who reached the tiebreaker round picked Missouri to win, but were quickly eliminated by the Kansas City Chiefs' 20-3 loss at Houston.
Of the three remaining, Thomas Washington underestimated the scoring in the Mizzou-Ole Miss game and overestimated the point totals for the Chiefs and Texans, to the tune of 46 points. Ruth Marsh was close on Houston, but the 15-point differential between what she though Kansas City would do and what the Chiefs actually did knocked her out of the running.
However, Carla Sheriff of Sweet Springs was about as close as any get in this round with her prediction of a 30-24 Tiger victory and 20-10 Texan triumph, so she wins the $20 cash prize for the week.
