Vernon W. Thompson, 72, of Marshall, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at Boone Hospital in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, with Rev. I. B. S. Groves officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at H. T. May and Son Funeral Home in Marshall, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Born July 4, 1935, in Marshall, he was the son of Lincoln and Anna Josephine Williams Thompson Sr. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed at Wood and Huston Bank, and was a civil service employee with the Marshall Post Office. He married Josephine Benham on Aug. 31, 1963; she preceded him in death in 1989. He was a 40-year member of the New Hannibal Lodge 20 F. & A.M. where he was a past master and secretary, he was worthy patron of Gertrude Madison Chapter 105 O.E.S. in Marshall, most excellent high priest of Dewitt R. Johnson H.R.A.M. of Sedalia, Queen City Consistory 109 of Jefferson City, past D.D.G.M. of the 4th District of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Missouri, grand standard bearer, district secretary and chief engineer of Royal Lauretta Court 15 of Sedalia, Sir Knight of the Far West Commandery, a member of American Legion Post 178 of Slater and treasurer of the Saline County Reunion Committee. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he served as assistant treasurer, chairman of the board of trustees and a member of the Men's Progressive Chorus.
Survivors include one daughter, Leslie Walker of Springfield; one son, Vernon Craig Thompson of Marshall; one sister, Consuelo Parker of Laurel, Md.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
