Babe Ruth Junior League/ConAgra remains unbeaten

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

There wasn't a lack of offensive production Tuesday during a Babe Ruth Junior League doubleheader as ConAgra remained undefeated with a 13-11 victory over Red Cross Pharmacy which wasn't as close as the final score indicated and Coreslab Structure's 21-1 rout of Slater.

ConAgra 13, Red Cross 11

ConAgra was out-hit by Red Cross, 10-7, but took advantage of seven walks, five hit batters and six errors to build a big lead.

Six runs came across in the top of the second inning, three on John Lozano's bases-loaded triple to cap the rally. Singles by Trent Crawford and John Long produced a Red Cross run in the bottom half of the frame and two more came across in the third when Adam Tucker's two-out double was followed by a single by Matt Buford and two errors.

However, ConAgra added to its 6-3 lead with five runs in the fourth, Collin Brennan knocking in the last two runs with a single.

Doubles by Jacob Lueck and Long shaved a run off of Red Cross' deficit to make it 11-4, but Lozano and Ryan Smith singled to begin the fifth -- scoring on a balk and error.

Red Cross (3-3) made it a game by tallying seven times against ConAgra's mop-up reliever in the bottom of the fifth, Lueck's three-run triple and RBI singles by Khristian Chamberlain and Jacob Phillips bringing the go-ahead run to the plate before Carter Austin recorded the final out with a whiff.

Lozano had three hits and Smith scored three runs to pace ConAgra (5-0).

Coreslab 21, Slater 1

Slater scored in the top of the first inning on Ethan Owens' double, but the rest of the game belonged to Coreslab -- which pounded out 14 hits and drew 11 walks.

Doubles which cleared the packed sacks by Drew Harris and Aaron Skinner fueled Coreslab's eight-run outburst in the bottom of the first. Harris had an RBI single in the second, another run crossing on a bases-loaded walk.

Coreslab went wild in the third, an 11-run explosion ending only when the lights went out five minutes before the two-hour time limit was due to expire. Evan Johnson had two triples, plating two runs on the second one after being thrown out at the plate after his lead-off shot.

Sebastian Sims doubled and singled to bring in two runs, Mike Castle had a two-run double and Ryland Plummer and Aaron Fulton added RBI singles as the last seven Coreslab batters hit safely.

Brandon Hicks also had a double for Slater (0-5), which took the field with only eight players.

Skinner and Harris each drove in four runs for Coreslab (3-3), which is tied with Red Cross in second place.
