Four people were injured -- one seriously -- in a five-vehicle pile-up Tuesday, June 12, on Interstate 70 near the 83 mile marker.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred as traffic was slowing near a highway construction project about 3:30 p.m.

Three people were transported via air ambulance to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

Kathy Lyon, 54, of Ballwin, suffered serious injuries, according to the report, and Melvin Lyon, 60, also of Ballwin, suffered moderate injuries. Matthew Rohe, 25, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, also suffered moderate injuries.

One person, Russell S. Jaynes, 39, of Parkville, was taken by ambulance to the I-70 Medical Center in Sweet Springs with moderate injuries.

The accident occurred when a 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Daniel Copeland, 49, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, apparently swerved to avoid colliding with another tractor-trailer rig and struck a 2004 Chevrolet driven by Melvin Lyon, pushing Lyon's vehicle into the median, troopers said.

Copeland's truck then struck a 2002 Oldsmobile driven by Rohe, a 2006 Chevrolet driven by Jaynes and a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Bruce A. Vogue of Independence.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing safety belts at the time, according to the report.

Copeland was uninjured in the accident. He was issued a summons for careless and imprudent driving, according to the report.

MSHP officers from Troop F assisted Troop A officers, and Saline County Sheriff's deputies, Marshall Fire Department, Saline County Ambulance, Air Evac from Sedalia and Flight for Life all responded to the scene.
