Floyd K. Brown, 19, of Marshall, was taken by air ambulance to University Hospital in Columbia. His condition was not available Monday morning, June 11. A passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries, according to the reports.
At about 10:05 p.m., a deputy parked at GE Energy, 223 E. Highway 240 in Slater, noticed an older model brown and tan Chevrolet truck traveling east on Highway 240 and decided to follow the vehicle because the license plate was not visible, according to the Sheriff's Department report.
When the deputy activated his emergency lights the truck began to accelerate, according to the report.
As deputy approached a corner, he notice a lot of debris on the north side of the county road, the sheriff's report said.
The deputy discovered the truck parked on the south side of the county road facing west with flames emitting from the hood on the passenger side and damage on the driver's side.
The deputy saw Cassondra M. Haley, 17, of Malta Bend, exiting the truck through the back window. Haley sustained minor injuries and was taken to Fitzgibbon Hospital by Slater EMS.
Haley advised the officer that Brown was driving. The deputies located Brown lying on the ground on the north side of the county road, which was approzimately 50 feet away from the truck. A second officer on the scene checked on Brown's condition.
The deputies said it appeared that Brown had been ejected from the truck when it rolled over. Neither Brown nor Haley apparently were wearing safety belts, deputies said.
According to deputies, Haley reported that Brown was running from law enforcement because he did not have a driver's license.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol accident report, Brown's vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, overturned coming to rest on its wheels in a ditch.
According to the highway patrol report, the accident is still under investigation.
