Flood report/May 7

The is a "significant flooding event" occurring across the area, according to the National Weather Service. Storms have produced a large swath of 3 to 5 inches of rainfall across northwest Missouri. Numerous small streams and rivers are flooding, and with the ground already saturated any additional rainfall will create the potential for flash flooding.

Missouri River at Waverly (flood stage is 20 feet):

-- At 5:45 a.m. Monday, May 7, the stage was 20 feet;

-- Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast;

-- The river is expected to rise to near 29.5 feet by Friday evening, then begin falling;

-- At 23.5 feet rural areas along the river which are not protected by levees flood.

The Missouri River at Miami (flood stage is 18 feet):

-- At 5:22 p.m. Sunday, May 6, the stage was 12.2 feet;

-- Major flooding is forecast.

-- The river is expected to rise above flood stage by late Monday morning, May 7, and continue to rise to near 30.5 feet by early Saturday morning.

-- At 29 feet levees are overtopped; farmland, homesteads and primary and secondary roads behind levees are flooded; Highway 41 north of Miami is flooded; and the river backs up Baker's Ditch and floods Highway 24 about 1 mile northeast of De Witt.

The Blackwater River near Blue Lick (flood stage is 24 feet):

-- At 8:45 a.m. Monday the stage was 26.7 feet;

-- Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast;

-- The river is expected to continue rising to near 29.2 feet by this evening and fall below flood stage late Thursday morning, May 10.

-- At 29 feet livestock in pastures along the river may be endangered and extensive damage to cropland and pasture occurs.
